DIY Record Flower Vase

May 25, 2024June 20, 2025, By: Marissa

Create your own easy DIY Record vases for birthdays, bachelorettes or any other 60’s or 70’s themed party. I am obsessed with how good these turned out. My favorite part is that this decor is SO easy to travel with. You just need to purchase vases and flowers at your destination. For this particular craft, I was making these flower vases for my mom’s 60th surprise birthday party The theme was “Welcome to the 60’s” and everything was 1960’s and retro-themed. See below my step-by-step guide on how to make the vases. Or if you don’t feel like reading, just watch the video.

Supplies for your DIY Record Flower Vase

If you aren’t traveling or suitcase space isn’t an issue, I have linked below all the supplies. For me, all I traveled with was the cut records and I went and got craft foam and fresh flowers once I landed.

  • Records – I went to local thrift stores for $1 records. The ones I ended up getting were very ugly which is why I decided to cover the labels. This is an extra step that you do not have to do
  • Fun paper – I used this to cover the labels and so that the color scheme matched. Other options: groovy & orange, checked, or retro mix.
  • Black paper – optional
  • Hot glue or epoxy glue if you decide to use the craft foam. Tape or glue dots will be ok for glass or plastic vases.
  • Elmer’s liquid glue – to glue the fun paper onto the record
  • Craft floral foam: I got the round ones and cut in half to match the shape of the half circle of the record.
  • Flowers: now, totally feel free to get fake ones, I just went to Trader Joe’s and got fresh ones. Fake Poppies, Ranunculus, multi-color bundle.
  • Ruler or any Straight Edge
  • exacto knife

Step by Step Guide

First measure and mark the halfway point of your record. Using your ruler or straight edge as a guide, start to score the record. Once you get a couple of score marks, your record should snap in half nicely.

Using a guide, I used a random candle nearby, trace a perfect circle on your fun paper. And then cut your circles in half. Make sure you have as many half circles as you have half records. This next step is optional, but I also cut out mini black circles and cut those in half to make the illusion of the center of the record. I used random tape for my guide.

Next glue your half circles to each half record. Add the half-black circles after that.

Now this is all I did pre-travel to my destination. The best part is how flat and easy it was to pack these in my luggage. The next step is to slice your craft foam in half. I ended up just using a big kitchen knife. That seemed to work the best.

Glue half of the record to one side of the foam, let cool completely, and now glue the other record to the other side of the foam.

Once everything is completely dry, start arranging your bouquet! This was my favorite part!

I made about 8 vases spread out throughout the party. They were SUCH a hit. As someone who is constantly traveling for Bachelorettes these days, all I could think about while making these was how easy, effective, and inexpensive they were. Maybe I should start a series called, “Crafts and decor you can fly with”. Which reminds me, I did also create a felt tablecloth. I’ll add that blog next!
