DIY Christmas Sweater With Lights

December 2, 2019April 24, 2023, By: Marissa

Ho, ho, ho you hoe’s, I’ve got the perfect DIY Sweater with Lights for your next ugly Christmas sweater party. More like a cute Christmas sweater party cause this DIY is CUTE. And it’s easy. What I like about this DIY Christmas Sweater is that it actually lights up. What is more holly and jolly than that?

For a lot of my past DIYs, I did a step-by-step guide that you had to read and my friend Erin told me reading is too much effort and she would rather watch something. SO. I filmed this DIY. I will still write out each step but if you are lazy like Erin, you can watch youtube. Check out some of last year’s DIY Advent Calendars!

Alright. Back to business. Let’s start with the supplies!

DIY Christmas Sweater With Lights Supply List:

  • Sweater: I got mine from Target because I randomly found a really fuzzy one. But, if you are in a hurry, Amazon has great options.
  • Craft lights: Any battery-operated craft lights will do. Just make sure they are for crafts. We don’t want any heavy-duty lights. You don’t need more than 6-8ft.
  • Black Yarn: Nothing crazy, super simple
  • Fabric or Tacky Glue
  • Colored Felt
  • Black Material or Felt: I personally had black scraps laying around from my Halloween costume but you can either use the black sheet of felt in the pack I linked above or find some black scraps at JoAnn’s.
  • Scissors
  • Needle and Thread

DIY Christmas Sweater With Lights How-to Guide

Step 1:

Start by wrapping the craft lights with black yarn. Wrap it all around the wire part.

Step 2:

Cut out Bulb shapes, using my template below, on your colored felt. Print out, or trace the light bulb shape onto your felt and cut out as many light bulb shapes as you need. Yes I know this looks like an egg. Honestly, you can just trace an egg if you want.

Step 3:

Cut out little squares from your black material. These will be the top of the felt lights. Using your glue, glue the little black squares to the felt. Let dry.

Step 4:

Drape and pin your black yarn-covered lights onto your sweater in whatever way you want. Using your needle and thread, hand-sew the wire to the sweater. I stitched every 3 lights and on the shoulders just to make sure it stayed secure.

Step 5:

After you have attached your string lights, pin the felt lights with their black tops over each bulb light. Make sure your craft light is covered by your felt light. Pin on each side of the felt to the sweater.

Step 6:

Once your sweater has your desired LEWK, unpin one side of the felt light, add a strip of glue, push it down back onto the sweater, and pin it back in place. Repeat on the other side of the felt, glue it, pin it. Then add a dab of glue to the black square top and glue it to the black yarn lights. Continue to glue your felt lights down and repin them. Let dry.

Step 7:

While your glue is drying, let’s work on the battery pack. Now, you can skip this step if you plan on just putting the battery pack into your pants pocket. Or you can sew a little pouch into the sweater. Cut out a square from your black fabric, big enough to hold the battery pack. Hand-stitch the square into the inside of your sweater in the most convenient location for you to reach the on/ off switch. Hand-stitch the bottom and two sides, not the top! Now you have a lil pouch for your battery back. OR stick it in your pants haha.

Step 8:

Done. Now you just have to impress everyone. “Look at me in my DIY Christmas Sweater.” “Hey, everyone watch this!” *turns on lights*. The crowd erupts in applause. A standing ovation? For me? You shouldn’t. I’m blushing.

I needed something that fit the theme and I could fly with in a carry on! I made about 8 and had them scattered about on tables throughout the party.
