Miss Frizzle Halloween Costume
I love Halloween! It’s my FAVVVVVVORITE holiday.
Every year I try to make the best costume to match my red hair. For years, I try to use my red hair as inspiration for costumes. Disney Princesses are usually my go-to, but this past year… I hit a gold mine. Miss Frizzle! It’s such a classic. It hits you right in the feels. This costume was super easy to make and inexpensive. It might look hard but I’ve broken down each step to make your own DIY Miss Frizzle Halloween Costume! If you want to see my other DIY costumes, check out my DIY Beyonce Coachella Homecoming Costume, DIY Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones or my DIY Meg from Hercules. And for more inspo, I have a whole post dedicated to Redhead Halloween Costumes. Yeeerrrr welcome.
My Miss Frizzle Halloween Costume
Now, I don’t want to brag, but I am going to. This costume was a HIT. I even won our costume contest at work. I thought I would share how to make it with my fellow redheads, so you too can win a Halloween contest. And give me 10% of the winnings.
I picked Miss Frizzle’s famous outer space outfit to recreate! But, you can google image Miss Frizzle and pick which dress you want to model after. Here is the Magic School Bus Space Book too if you want to buy it and read up on the entire story haha!
It’s super cute to wear to work, out to bars, or to take kids trick or treating.
Or if you are more like me, lay around on the couch eating the candy for the trick-or-treaters.
This tutorial is pretty easy and cheap. Feel free to skip steps or add your own! Let’s get started on your own Miss Frizzle Halloween Costume!
Supplies:
Side note, I am affiliated with Amazon associates program so I make a lil mullaaahh off my links, because I am a savvy business woman. Ok?
Miss Frizzle Dress
- Blue long sleeve dress
- I found plenty of options at Ross, Marshalls, TjMaxx, and Forever21 as well
- Or just amazon
- White collared shirt (you can either cut off the cuffs/collar and sew it onto the dress or wear it underneath your dress) If you want to spend the least amount of money possible, check out a thrift store, or maybe your dad/brother/bf has an old one laying around
- Tights – If you are notttt. tan like me, or want to me a little warmer, I wore tights under my costume.
- Miss Frizzle Jewelry – Cause I like to be as extra as possible
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread will do if you don’t have a machine
- Fabric glue will also work if you literally can’t sew
- Materials to decorate the dress
- fabric paint. Glow in the dark fabric paint, Cutting out shapes from felt would work too
- Buying planet/ star stickers or glow-in-the-dark stars can work too
- Fabric Paper (optional)
- Fabric paper link: Printable fabric paper
- Printable graphics: click here to download magic school bus printable graphics
School Bus (optional, but like, it completes the outfit and you probably won’t win without it, ok?)
- Kids pop up bus tent toy: This item is NECESSARY to pull off the costume and WIN
- The exact bus I bought: Kids expandable bus toy
- Dark Blue 1-2 inch thick elastic. 4 yards, I got mine at JoAnn’s cause… coupons.
- Safety pins
- Glue
- Scissors
- Printable graphics (click here to download magic school bus printable bus graphics)
Lizard
- Stuffed lizard (Finding a CHEAP lizard was actually the hardest part of this costume lol)
- Velcro. you don’t need more than 5 inches: Velcro strips, Velcro dots
- Needle and thread or fabric glue
Lastly, if you want to be in FULL character, I suggest reading up on the entire story of The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System. Or you can just carry it around with you.
That might look like a lot but remain calm, it’s not.
You can be as detailed as you like. The less detailed… the less chance of winning. But I understand if you didn’t set aside 2 months to prepare your costume. To each their own.
Step 1:
First, lay out your blue dress on a table. Insert thick paper, newspaper or cardboard in the dress if you are gluing or painting your dress so it doesn’t bleed through.
Step 2:
Next, begin decorating your dress with whatever you bought (paint, stickers, cut-out felt, etc). Get creative! When you’ve finished one side, and it’s completely dry, flip it over and do the other side. You might need to insert new paper inside the dress.
Step 3:
If you are just wearing a collared shirt under your dress, skip this step. If not… don’t skip it. Cut the cuffs off each sleeve and the collar around the neck, leaving an extra 1/2″ or 1″ of fabric. Sew or glue the collar to the inside of the dress around the neckline. Do the same for the cuffs on each sleeve. Make sure not to make the cuffs too tight.
Step 4:
Next, print out the “Hello, My Name Is” image and the Magic School Bus logo on the fabric paper. Glue the name tag onto the front of the dress and glue the logo to the back.
Step 5:
Set the dress to the side to fully dry and grab your bus! Print out the images of the kids from the download folder or click here to download magic school bus, on normal, white printer paper. YOU DON’T NEED TO USE YOUR FABRIC PAPER. Cause that shit’s expensive. Next, cut out each of the kids. I added a border around the kids, which you can leave on or cut off. You do you. Glue each kid into a window on the bus. I added two liz’s to each side because there aren’t enough kids.
Step 6:
If you want to take your bus to the next level, paint “The Magic” above “School Bus” on the side. If you want to be as authentic as possible. You can even print out the words and glue it on if you prefer not to paint. (See Above)
Step 7:
After your bus dries, cut out the bottom of the bus. You can do a hole or remove the entire bottom. Cut two strips of elastic for your straps. The size will vary. I did about 1 yard (3 feet) of the elastic per strap. Attach each strap to the bus (like pictured) with safety pins or you can sew it in if you wish. I did safety pins so I could remove the straps, or make them tighter. I crisscrossed the back so it didn’t fall off my shoulders. Try on the bus and adjust the straps if necessary.
Step 8:
Place the bus to the side and grab your lizard and your dress. I wanted the lizard to be perched on my shoulder for this costume, but you don’t have to. If you do, glue or sew a 1-2 inch strip of Velcro to the underbelly of the lizard. Sew or glue the other half of the velcro strip to the shoulder of the dress. I had the dress on to do this so I could get the placement right. I liked the idea of the velcro in case the lizard got annoying at work and because I didn’t want the lizard permanently on the dress.
Step 9:
Stand back and admire all your hard work. Maybe grab a bite to eat and a cocktail.
Step 10:
Throw your hair into a messy bun, put on your outfit with some heels, grab your bus and get ready to WIN!
This costume can easily be made into a couples costume, just have your partner wear the bus! Or the dress idk your life.
ALL DONE!
