Visit Athens, Greece

June 5, 2017April 6, 2020, By: Marissa

Planning to visit Athens, Greece? An ancient architect’s dream! Everything is old, old, old.

thats old gif

So many great ancient sites. Everything was pretty cheap here so you can get more bang for your buck.

Money: Euros
Transportaion: Metro, taxi and Ubers
Language: Greek, a large majority spoke English in the heart of Athens. The more you travel out of the city center, the less English you are bound to find.

Where to Eat in Athens

One does not simply tire of Greek food. EAT IT ALL.

Breakfast and Cafe’s in Athens

  • Yiasemi – great homemade breakfast/ lunch stop.
  • Takis Bakery – Great bakery
  • Stani– FANTASTIC greek yogurt, a bit of a walk to totally worth it. Probably the best yogurt I’ve ever had

Lunch and Dinner in Athens

  • Dio Dekares i Oka– Lovely dinner right below the Airbnb.
  • Kosta’s Souvlaki– BEST Souvlaki in town. Hands down
  • Ergon – So fresh and delish

Dessert in Athens, Greece

  • Snoyo– greek, frozen yogurt
  • Dickie Dee – Obviously get the candy floss
  • Fullspoon – Cute ice cream spot
  • Candy Cat – Honestly, just go in here and look around. And maybe eat everything haha.

Where to Stay in Athens

We stayed in an Airbnb– Great location. Athens is fairly cheap. If you wanted to splurge and get a nice hotel with a view I would recommend!

What to Do in Athens

There is so much to do and so little time. The Greek’s are great at preserving old shit!

  • Athens City Pass– get your pass here!
  • Plaka Steps–  Oldest part of Athens, great shops/restaurants
place steps Athens Greece
  • The Acropolis Museum– We visited the museum before going up the Acropolis.
  • The Acropolis– a bit of a hike, but def worth it!
  • Parthenon– The bell of the ball. At the top of the Acropolis.
parthenon Athens Greece
  • Roman Agora– Another ruin to wander through
  • Temple of Zeus– Oh look, another ruin
  • National Gardens– Gorg gardens in the city center
  • Shopping– Lots of streets for shopping, shops around every corner.

Tips

  • One of my biggest tips is to be aware if you are a woman and wear shorts. One of the hot days we were there, I decided to wear a romper. I can’t tell you how uncomfortable I was. It felt like every man was staring at my legs. Right in the city center was fine, but towards the outskirts of the city, the more uncomfortable I was. The women caaaaan wear shorts, its not unheard of, it’s just not common.
  • Known for olive oil, so get yourself some nice soap!
  • Try Ouzo. Famous Greek alcohol

That concludes my Visit Athens, Greece list!! The city is large and there is plenty to eat, see and do! If you are visiting Mykonos as well, check out my Mykonos Destination Blog as well. Make sure to check out my Travel Diary about my time in Greece, HERE! I have tons more blogs on other destinations around Europe as well! Enjoy your visit to Athens!
